How to create a fillable PDF

  1. Step 1: Select or drop the PDF you want to turn into a form.

  2. Step 2: Pick a field type in the toolbar: Text field, Multi-line text field, Checkbox, Radio button, Dropdown or Signature box.

  3. Step 3: Click or drag on the page to place each field, then give it a name, a default value or a list of options.

  4. Step 4: Click Create fillable PDF and download your interactive form.

A real PDF form, not just text on a page

A flat PDF has to be printed, filled in by hand and scanned back. A fillable PDF can be completed on a computer or phone, saved and sent by email, and every answer stays neat and readable.

The fields you add are standard PDF form fields (AcroForm), so they work in Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview on Mac, web browsers and most mobile PDF apps, with nothing to install for the people filling them in.

What kinds of fields can I add?

Single-line and multi-line text fields (with an optional default value and font size), checkboxes, radio buttons (buttons with the same name form one group, only one can be chosen), dropdown lists with your own options, and signature boxes that can be signed in a PDF reader.

Fields keep the page rotation and accept Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic and Devanagari text. Fields already in the PDF are kept and can be filled in, and the rest of the editor (text, images, links, shapes, pages) stays available. Turn on Flatten forms in the Forms menu only if you want a final, non-editable copy.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PDF form maker free?

Yes. You can create as many fillable PDFs as you like, with no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of fields beyond the general page and size limits.

Will the fields work in Adobe Reader and on a phone?

Yes. The fields are standard interactive PDF form fields, which Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview, Chrome, Edge, Firefox and most mobile PDF readers can fill in and save.

Can I make a fillable PDF from a Word document?

Yes. Convert it with Word to PDF first, then open the PDF here and add your fields.

How do I create a group of radio buttons?

Give the radio buttons the same field name: they form one group, and only one of them can be selected. Each button keeps its own choice value.

What happens to my PDF afterwards?

The upload is deleted once your fields are added. The fillable PDF can be downloaded for 30 minutes and is then deleted automatically, or right away with Delete now.
