Getting a truly editable result
Conversion works best with PDFs that were created digitally, for example exported from Word, a website or accounting software. Their text is real text, so it comes out as paragraphs you can select, correct and restyle.
A scanned document is different: each page is a picture of text. Run it through OCR PDF first to add a text layer, then convert that version to Word. Complex layouts with columns, tables or lots of images may need a few adjustments afterwards.
If you only need to fix a typo or fill in a field, editing the PDF directly can be quicker than converting it: Edit PDF lets you add text while keeping the original layout intact.
Frequently asked questions
Will the Word file look exactly like the PDF?
Simple documents convert well. Tables, columns and elaborate designs may need touching up, and depending on the conversion method, images may not be included.
Why does my Word document contain no text?
Your PDF is most likely a scan, so its pages are images. Use OCR PDF to recognise the text first, then convert the result.
Can I edit the file in Google Docs?
Yes. Upload the .docx to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs, or open it directly in Word, LibreOffice or Pages.
Is my document kept after conversion?
No. The PDF is deleted as soon as the conversion is done, and the Word file is removed when its download link expires after 30 minutes.
